Tips on how to detect, monitor and trap pests

The timely detection of pests in a crop is of great importance, because the sooner a pest is detected, the sooner you can start controlling the pest. By monitoring the development on the signal rollers and/or sticky traps, you can see whether the chosen control strategy is the right one, or whether it needs to be adjusted. There are various signaling products for detecting and removing pests, including sticky traps and sticky traps. In this article, our specialists provide tips for the optimal use of these signaling products.

General tips for signaling and capturing pests

Signal rollers and plates are available in the colours yellow and blue. It is important that you choose the right colour. The colour 'yellow' has a greater attraction on aphids, leafminers, white flies, fungus flies and thrips, while the colour 'blue' is used to signal and catch thrips in particular.

Signal plates are available with different types of glue: dry glue and wet glue. For signaling purposes, the dry variant is usually used. Because counting is only possible if the insects are attached separately from each other, a thin/dry adhesive layer is used. If an insect is stuck to the signal roller, then that spot is 'full' and no other insect can get stuck there. Signal plates with wet glue are mainly used to catch pests. Because of the thicker adhesive layer the insect 'drowns' as it were and the adhesive runs over it, so that insects can be caught again at the same spot. This makes these products more suitable for longer use. Note: products with wet glue are less or not suitable for export, because the glue can run off the board due to high temperatures during transport.

If you have purchased sticky trap rolls or trap sheets but do not yet intend to use them, then make sure that you store them in a dry and cool place. This will help preserve the quality of the adhesive.

Tips on how to use sticky trap rolls
In addition to different colours, sticky trap rolls are available in different types:
- Standard signal roller: the adhesive layer of this type of signal roller is dry and has a powerful adhesive power. This type of signal roller is provided with Royal Brinkman label and printing and can be used for an entire growing season. The signal rolls are available in lengths varying from 80 to 130 meters and in widths of 5 cm, 10 cm, 15 cm and 30 cm. The best width to use depends on the crop. In tomato cultivation, signal rollers of 15 centimeters are used in most cases, but at a lower pest pressure you can opt for rolls of 10 centimeters in order to have less light loss. Rolls of 30 centimeters are the least used, but can sometimes be used in hotspots to massively capture pests.

- Signal roller with thrips pheromone: this signal roller has an extra attracting effect on both male and female thrips because of the printed pattern on the roller and the processed attractant in the glue. The signal roller can be used in both vegetables and ornamental plants. The signal rollers have a powerful and user-friendly adhesive on both sides. This type of glue does not stick to the fingers, but it does ensure that it holds the captured insects very well.

The signal rollers must be correctly rolled out and attached. The use of a ribbon brace helps you to hang the roll in a correct position in relation to the crop. There are different types of sticky trap ribbon and fixing ways.

In ornamental plants, you can use signal rollers all year round. In vegetable crops it is best to place the signal rollers immediately after planting a new crop during the crop rotation, or in the period shortly thereafter. For both situations: place one signal roller per two or three caps. In tomato cultivation we advise you to preventively hang one ribbon per trellis and in case of an increase in hot spots one ribbon per row.

Tips on how to use sticky trap sheets
There are also different types available for sticky traps. The most important difference between these types is the type of adhesive: wet or dry. In addition, sticky traps are available in different sizes: 10 by 25cm and 40 by 25cm.

To make it easier to register, telegrams have been installed on the signaling plates. With a high pest pressure, it is then simpler to install the grids on the trusses.

To hang the sticky traps, there are plate holders. For signaling purposes, the sticky trap holder magnet is used for mounting on the leg. To catch masses, for example in a chrysanthemum crop, one chooses to mount on the truss.
